LASAVANNE JÜRGEN SOOCRAMANIEN

President 

Jürgen is a gender studies graduate from the University of Mauritius as well as a civic leadership graduate from the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Center in Southern Africa. He is enrolled for a master’s in public policy and administration at the University of Mauritius. 

Previously, Jürgen served as secretary and treasurer at the Young Queer Alliance and since March 2020, he is serving as President of the organisation.

Jürgen is a fervent human rights defender who has a strong interest in LGBTQIA issues, women’s rights movements, ethnic minorities, and mental health issues. He is currently a member of the African Queer Youth Initiative (AQYI). Within the AQYI, Jürgen also forms part of the Human Rights Taskforce where he is occupying the role of co-chair.

Besides, He is passionate about intersectionality, queer culture and discovering new horizons. Jürgen loves pop music, flowery shirt, hiking, theater, public speaking, diversity and has a strong belief in satyagraha (Philosophy of non-violent resistance).

AUBEELUCK VIPINE

Vice President

Vipine joined the YQA Team in 2015 as a member. Since then, his journey allowed him to grow from being an Auditor at the organisation to then serve as Vice-Secretary, Secretary and since 2019, as Vice-President.

Learning Science through academic education, business through career profession and sociology through voluntary social work allowed him to become quite versatile in his tasks at the YQA.

He is also pursuing his Master degrees in Business Administration. Initially of jolly but introvert nature, Vipine has discovered new grounds of his personality since joining the YQA.

AUBEELUCK VIPINE

Vice President

DOORJEAN SAARVESH

Secretary

Saarvesh Doorjean (Mim) is a Health Care Assistant in level 2, and he was Diplomate in 2018 at the Quatre Bornes Professional Training Centre under the CITY & Guilds license.

He joined the YQA in 2015 as an active member and also as a Peer Educator in the HIV Programme under the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).

Previously, he was a Vice-Treasurer in 2018 and Treasurer in 2019. Mim was elected as Secretary at the YQA since March 2020.

DOORJEAN SAARVESH

Secretary

POTIÉ INGRID EMMELINE

Vice Secretary

Emmeline is a sociology graduate from the University of Mauritius. She is a former educator and is currently working at the National Human Rights Commission as investigator.

Emmeline is an Executive member of the YQA committee since 2019 and has been elected as Vice-Secretary in 2020.

Emmeline is immensely driven by growth, consistency and leadership. She has also great interest in ecological and humanitarian activities. Emmeline has been volunteering for a number of causes including education, environment, mental health, and human rights issues.

Vice Secretary

Emmeline is a sociology graduate from the University of Mauritius. She is a former educator and is currently working at the National Human Rights Commission as investigator.

GUNGABISSOON DINKAR

Treasurer

Dinkar has been a very active member at the YQA and previously worked as peer educator under HIV programmes at the organisation following his active participation in various workshops and conferences on HIV. 

He also served as auditor and Vice-Treasurer before being elected as Treasurer since March 2020. In addition, Dinkar has been the alternate member at the Country Coordinating Mechanism for the Global Fund in 2018 and 2019 and was Vice-Treasurer at A.I.L.E.S.

Professionally, Dinkar has four years of experience in the BPO sector. He strongly believes in human rights. None of us is equal until all of us are equal.

Irfaan Nauzeer works in the BPO sector and has more than five years of experience in customer relations. 

He joined the YQA as an active member and was subsequently  a Peer Educator after participating in various training, conferences and youth empowerment programmes. As a peer educator, he has been very proactive with raising awareness about the risk of HIV/AIDS. 

Irfaan is a Plus-Size Fashion Influencer, and he is passionate about human rights, queer culture, body positivity and firmly believes in Equality for all. He loves pop culture, photography, theatre, art, music and much more.

Auditor 

Ameenah is currently working as a chemist in the private sector. She has joined Young Queer Alliance to contribute to the welfare of the LGBTQ+ community.

She has seen the evolution of this organisation on social media as well as on the field. Ameenah wishes to learn more about LGBT organising and to advocate for the human rights of LGBT people in Mauritius.

FOKEERBUX NAJEEB AHMAD

Advisory and Mentoring Committee Member & Founder

Najeeb is the Founder of Young Queer Alliance (YQA) and has experience working with LGBT youth since 2011. Najeeb previously held positions of responsibility in various organisations such as the Rivière-du-Rempart Youth Centre Advisory Committee, the Youth Action Movement, the Organisation Miss-Roi D’Été, Association VISA-G, Collectif Arc-en-Ciel, We Help You and Jeunesse Militante. Upon recommendation by the Prime Minister’s Office (National AIDS Secretariat), in 2014, Najeeb became a certified trainer for the Pan African Comprehensive Sexuality Education through Save the Children International.

In addition, from 2018 to 2019, Najeeb served as Chairperson of the African Queer Youth Initiative; an organisation regrouping young LGBTQI leaders across Africa and was Firm representative of Gay and Bisexual Men as well as Vice-Chair of the Oversight Committee on the Mauritius Country Coordinating Mechanism against HIV.

Currently, Najeeb works in the administrative cadre in Mauritian Government as Assistant Permanent Secretary in charge of projects, planning and finance at the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Additionally, Najeeb is a Steering Committee member of MPact – Global Action for Gay Men’s Health and Rightsformerly MSMGF. Since 2019, Najeeb has been nominated to serve in the Community, Rights and Gender Advisory Group of the Global Fund against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

They engage in a particular practice concerning the rights of LGBTQI persons so that their fundamental civil rights are respected.

She leads through example and is a great believe in giving people space and proper guidance and mentoring to develop. Anushka key drives are about reflective aciton learning; alignment of strategic business goals and objectives; engagement and committment to Gender Links Mauritius; gained through mentoring and counselling.
