FOKEERBUX NAJEEB AHMAD (he/him)
President & Founder
Najeeb works as Assistant Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Wellness in Mauritius since December 2019 and holds a Master in Business Administration with specialization in Public Administration and a Bachelor in Civil Engineering.
Najeeb is the founder and current President of the Young Queer Alliance and also serves on the Board of Directors of MPact – Global Action for Gay Men’s Health and Rights. In 2014, he was the complainant who lifted the blood donation ban on homosexuals and bisexuals in Mauritius. He is also one of the plaintiffs who litigated against Section 250(1) of the Criminal Code of Mauritius which criminalised homosexuality.
Previously, he was board member of various local LGBTQIA+ NGOs and has been a fervent activist in the HIV/AIDS struggle, including through the Country Coordinating Mechanism on HIV and also the Community, Rights and Gender Advisory Group of the Global Fund against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

GOUNDAN DHANALAKSHMI (she/her)
Vice-President
Previously the Manager and Advocate of YQA, Dhana has been elected to the board of the Young Queer Alliance as the Vice-President of the organisation. She has been a dedicated activist to the community since she joined the organisation in 2022. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Software Engineering and a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management.
Dhana also has her own business, a snack called “Siloy pa Siloy ” at Rose Hill. Through her various work experiences and through all of her work at YQA, Dhana has acquired a set of skills and a flow of knowledge that will help her excel in her role as the Vice-President of the organisation. Since 2023, Dhana has also done several videos with the local media to educate people about the LGBTQIA+ communities and she has done a variety of content with her girlfriend Wendy to portray Mauritian Queer Couples.
Besides that, she is really passionate about cooking, her business and her will to build a better and more inclusive country for the LGBTQIA+ community.

AUBEELUCK VIPINE (he/him)
Secretary
Vipine joined the YQA Team in 2015 as a member. Since then, his journey allowed him to grow within the organisation in roles such as Vice-Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, President and since 2024 as Secretary.
Learning Science through academic education, business through career profession and sociology through voluntary social work allowed him to become quite versatile in his tasks at the YQA.
He has completed his Master degrees in Business Administration and works at the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Initially of jolly but introverted nature, Vipine has discovered new grounds of his personality since joining the YQA.

Vice-Secretary
Vraj works as an academic in the field of psychology at a private tertiary institution in Mauritius. She has undertaken her studies in Psychology, Neuroscience and Counselling.
They have acquired a broad range of tools and skills for conducting psychological research. She wishes to shed light on queer mental health and promote the well-being of LGBTQIA+ folks in the local context. They began getting involved with YQA since 2021 after returning from their studies abroad and joined the team this year as their Vice-Secretary.
Vraj is an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and passionate about cultivating a society rich in cultural competency through diversity, equity and inclusive practices.

LASAVANNE JÜRGEN SOOCRAMANIEN (he/him)
Treasurer
Jürgen holds a degree in sociology with a specialisation in gender studies and a master’s degree in public policy and administration from the University of Mauritius. He is also a civic leadership graduate from the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Centre in Southern Africa. He is enrolled for a master’s degree in Human Rights Law at the University of Mauritius.
Previously, Jürgen served as secretary, treasurer, and President at the Young Queer Alliance and since February 2024, he is again serving as Treasurer of the organisation.
Jürgen is a fervent human rights defender with extensive experience in advocating for the rights of sexual minorities. He also has a strong interest in LGBTQIA+ issues, women’s rights movements, ethnic minorities, and mental health issues.
Besides, he is passionate about intersectionality, queer culture, and discovering new horizons. Jürgen has a strong belief in satyagraha (Philosophy of non-violent resistance) and Ubuntu (Philosophy of being self through others).

He talks about the stigma and challenges that the LGBTQIA+ community goes through and other topics such as human rights, femicide, animal abuse amongst others.
Besides that, he is passionate about music, studies about queer people and fashion. His goal as the new Executive Member is to help more youngsters discover the organisation and for them to participate in the activism of the NGO.

Rohun has pursued his studies in BSc (Hons) Sociology with a specialization in Gender Studies at the University of Mauritius. Motivated by a lifelong awareness of social injustice and a desire to effect positive change, Rohun chose this course of study. Equipped with invaluable skills acquired from his lecturers, including qualitative and quantitative research abilities, public speaking, and presentation skills, Rohun feels prepared to leverage his capabilities to assist those who face vulnerability and injustice.
Having formed connections within LGBTQIA+ communities, Rohun has listened to their narratives of adversity in public spaces. Joining Young Queer Alliance (YQA), Rohun is committed to supporting and advocating for his allies within the community. Rohun’s global network of friends within LGBTQIA+ communities engages in meaningful exchanges through video games, sharing stories and experiences that broaden his understanding. He believes that these stories, when shared with YQA members, can foster greater empathy and support within the community.
Rohun’s core belief is that justice should liberate rather than subjugate. He finds beauty in imperfection, honesty in emotion, and strength in vulnerability, embracing the notion that true grace is found in authenticity.

Since 2021, she has actively contributed to YQA, where she both volunteers and benefits from the supportive Safe Spaces and engaging Group Discussions.
Now, Abby is thrilled to be working at YQA, pursuing her dream job as a Social Worker for Trans Empowerment. She brings with her a wealth of experience from various professional settings, all leading up to this meaningful role. Her vision is clear: to see Mauritius as a beacon of equity and inclusivity for all, supported by laws that promote fairness and justice.
