The YQA is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates who wish to be considered as full-time Advocacy Officer for the organisation starting December 2025 and ending August 2027.

A. Candidates should:

  • have a strong interest in LGBTQIA+ issues, gender, human rights and HIV/AIDS;
  • have a network working with LGBTQIA+ communities;
  • be knowledgeable on the human rights of LGBTQIA+ persons;
  • be conversant with regional and international human rights instruments;
  • have good research and analytical skills;
  • have good communication and interpersonal skills as well as experience in public speaking; and
  • be computer literate.

B. Candidates should possess a degree in Law, Human Rights, Social Sciences, Political Science or equivalent/any other qualification acceptable to the organisation. It would be an advantage if the candidate has experience in advocacy.

The onus to demonstrate the above requirements rests on the candidates.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of the selected candidate will be as follows:

Project Implementation and Advocacy
  • Coordinate, manage, plan and implement activities under the Marang Fund Project “Safer and more inclusive communities for LGBTQIA+ people in Mauritius through safe spaces and advocacy”.
  • Liaise with resource persons/organisations to provide quality empowerment to LGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Act as a key worker and cooperate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fully participate in meetings and workshops organised by partner organisations and different Ministries/Departments to promote LGBTQIA+ visibility, inclusion and empowerment.
  • Act as facilitator/trainer occasionally to share information with beneficiaries and LGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Monitor and evaluate activities implemented under the Project.
  • Prepare progress reports and project completion reports.
Advocacy, Lobby and Partnership Building
  • Create and execute strategies to advance LGBTQIA+ rights at local, national, and international levels. 
  • Support the Identification, and participate in networks in established YQA priority areas with relevant stakeholders and partners, providing salient information continuously.
  • Network with stakeholders to build strategic relationships and deepen YQA’s understanding of key policy issues and advocacy opportunities.
  • Represent YQA in relevant governance, planning, intelligence and coalition meetings.
  • Act as a key worker and cooperate with multidisciplinary teams.
Monitor and research
  • Conduct research, gather data, and analyse information to inform evidence-based advocacy efforts and campaigns.
  • Support the collection and documentation of impact stories for sharing, learning and advocacy.
  • Draft written materials and copy for social media as well as supporting digital communications.
  • Identify and lead resource mobilisation development opportunities contributing to concept and proposal development and donor reports.
  • Establish and maintain all documentation, data and information related to research, policy and advocacy.
Campaigns and Communications
  • Planning, coordination, and implementation of impactful campaigns aimed at raising awareness, promoting acceptance, and challenging discrimination against the LGBTIQIA+ community. 
  • Collaborate with partners to coordinate joint advocacy initiatives, share resources, and amplify our collective impact.
  • Support the development of grassroots networks and engage community members in advocacy and campaigns. Organise and facilitate capacity-building activities, workshops, and training sessions to empower individuals to become active advocates for change.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of advocacy efforts and campaigns. Prepare regular reports on progress, outcomes, and challenges faced, providing recommendations for improvement and future strategies.
Other responsibilities
  • Contribute to project and programme activities that supports the achievement of YQA’s organisational goals.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as may be required.

 

The Advocacy Officer shall receive an all-inclusive salary (including transport and phone allowances and deductions as per law) of MUR 35,000 monthly while performing their duties.
