Love, Equality and Human Rights: Towards Same-Sex Marriage
At Young Queer Alliance, we believe that equality, dignity, and human rights should extend to all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. As conversations around marriage equality continue to grow around the world, YQA remains committed to advancing research, and advocacy on the legal recognition of same-sex unions in Mauritius.
Research on same-sex marriage in Mauritius
As pillars of this major initiative, a research project on the legal recognition of same-sex unions in Mauritius has been commissioned by Sandy Christ Bhaganooa on behalf of the Young Queer Alliance. This study “A Comparative Analysis of Same-Sex Marriage in Mauritius”, which has been finalised in June 2026, examines the current legal framework, barriers to recognition, and opportunities for reform. The findings will be disseminated in August 2026 and are expected to contribute to evidence-based discussions on marriage equality and LGBTQ+ rights in Mauritius.
In parallel, Lakshita Kanhaiya and Michael Gyan Nyarko are conducting research on the socioeconomic implications of marriage equality. Their work explores how equal marriage rights can impact access to social protection, inheritance rights, financial security, healthcare decision-making, family recognition, and overall quality of life for same-sex couples and their families. The research is expected to be finalised in September 2026.
Advocacy towards same-sex marriage in Mauritius
Beyond research, YQA is investing in building stronger and more informed networks of advocates. On 10 and 11 December 2025, with the support of Freedom to Marry Global, we organised a capacity-building workshop bringing together representatives from Collectif Arc-en-Ciel, RekonekT, Gender Links, and members of the media. Through meaningful discussions with legal professionals, civil society organisations, and human rights practitioners, participants gained valuable insights into the legal, social, and human rights dimensions of marriage equality.
We also recognise the crucial role of public awareness and responsible media support in shaping social change. Through engagement with media representatives, YQA continues to encourage informed and respectful conversations about marriage equality, helping to ensure that public discussions are rooted in facts, empathy, and human rights principles.
Complaint at the National Human Rights Commission
On 02 February 2026, the YQA has filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission, challenging the discrimination that currently prevents two people of the same sex from marrying in Mauritius. This action reflects our commitment to seeking equal protection and equal treatment under the law for all citizens.
Marriage equality is about more than legal recognition. It is about affirming the dignity of loving and committed couples, strengthening families, and creating a society where everyone can participate fully and equally. YQA will continue working towards a Mauritius where every person enjoys the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities, regardless of who they love.
