Call for Membership Application: African Queer Youth Initiative
The African Queer Youth Initiative (AQYI) was formed by a dedicated group of LGBTI youth of Africa during the 2015 Changing Faces, Changing Spaces conference in Kenya. AQYI is committed to advocating for the sexual health, rights and general wellbeing of LGBTI youth in the African continent and has opened its call for application from interested young people to become members.
The Other Foundation: International Parents Groups Convening
The Other Foundation grouped activists and organisations working with parents of LGBTI people in a two days “International Parents Groups Convening”. Diksha Purmessur from the Young Queer Alliance was hosted by The Other Foundation to participate at the convening.
Opportunity: Mandela Washington Fellowship
The application for the 2018 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is open to future leaders aged between 25 and 35 years old. Any potential applicant will have until October 11 to apply. Applicants should have a proven record of leadership and accomplishment in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement. They should be committed to public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship. In addition, candidates must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English. The Fellowship is scheduled to take place June 15-August 1, 2018.
YQA Alternative Report at the 121st Session of the UN Human Rights Committee
During the next months, Mauritius will be reviewed by the Human Rights Committee at the United Nations during its 121st session. The Committee has ask the Mauritian Government to clarify a List of Issues. In the Reply to List of Issues the government has provided some information. With a view to utilise international human rights instruments to push for human rights of LGBT people, the Young Queer Alliance research centre has submitted an alternative report telling the committee members about the situation of LGBTI people in Mauritius.

As his mandate as British High Commissioner to Mauritius comes to an end, Jonathan Drew gave an interview to the sizzling Touria Prayag of L’Express Weekly. He deplored that “Mauritius has not been able to do away with the terrible colonial-era law of discrimination against gays” while altogether saluting the work of local NGOs and the Young Queer Alliance.
Being Queer and Muslim: An irreconcilable dichotomy?
Being Queer and Muslim; facing slurs such as the ‘harams’ (or forbidden), the ‘luti’ (in reference to the people of prophet Lut/Lot) for being Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender (LGBT); and at the same time living stigmatising attitudes towards Islam brought by Islamophobia and relating Islam to terrorism; hardships of Queer people also identifying as Muslims manifest on diverse fronts.

UNESCO has launched a call for proposals for young change-makers to attend the 10th UNESCO Youth Forum, entitled “Rethinking Youth Engagement with UNESCO” (25-26 October 2017, UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France).
