What is IDAHOBIT?

IDAHOBIT stands for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia, observed every year on May 17. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the discrimination, violence, and exclusion faced by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) people around the world.

At the heart of democracy
IDAHOBIT 2026: At the heart of democracy

The theme for IDAHOBIT 2026 is “At the heart of democracy”, not only because human rights and freedoms and access to justice should prevail in a democratic society, but because every single moment of every single day, the safety, security, freedom, emotions and love, that every single LGBTQIA+ people should have, similar to any other human being, is what democracy stands for. Whether it is in one’s house or family, on the streets, accessing medical care, in schools, at the workplace, for banking and insurance facilities, the justice and freedom that holds true for any citizen, should hold true for every single LGBTQIA+ person.

“…because every single moment of every single day, the safety, security, freedom, emotions and love, that every single LGBTQIA+ people should have, similar to any other human being, is what democracy stands for.”

In Mauritius, IDAHOBIT remains especially important because many members of the LGBTQIA+ community still experience harassment, bullying, violence, and discrimination in their daily lives. Trans women, in particular, often face exclusion and difficulties because their identity documents may not reflect their gender identity or appearance. As a minority community, LGBTQIA+ individuals are still too often subjected to judgment and mistreatment in public spaces simply for being themselves. IDAHOBIT is therefore, not only a day of visibility, but also a call for equality, dignity, and human rights for everyone.

What Does IDAHOBIT Represent?

For many people, IDAHOBIT is a powerful symbol of solidarity, resilience, and hope within the LGBTQIA+ community. It is a reminder that every person deserves to live freely, safely, and with respect, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

This day also gives people the opportunity to share an important message: no one should live in fear of discrimination or violence. Despite our differences, we must continue to promote love, understanding, and unity instead of hate and division.

Within our own communities, it is equally important to encourage peace, respect, and compassion toward one another. Awareness begins with understanding that every human being deserves kindness and acceptance.

How Does Kindness Support Inclusion?

Kindness may seem simple, but it has the power to change lives.

Acts of kindness, active listening, and compassion help people feel safe, valued, and accepted. When individuals are treated with respect and without judgment, they are more likely to feel comfortable expressing themselves and participating fully in society. Sometimes people may judge others without realizing the impact of their words or actions. However, when we take the time to listen, understand, and support one another, we create stronger and more inclusive communities. Feeling heard and accepted can give someone the courage and confidence to live openly and authentically.

Inclusion starts with empathy and with recognizing the humanity in every person.

What Message Should The Community Receive?

Today, it is more important than ever for LGBTQIA+ youth to remain strong, resilient, brave, and courageous.

Young people must continue to stand up for their rights and raise their voices against the bullying, discrimination, harassment, and violence that many still face every day. They should know that they are not alone, that their identities are valid, and that they deserve love, safety, and equal opportunities like everyone else. At the same time, all young people regardless of identity should be encouraged to build a future based on respect, equality, and acceptance.

Moving Forward Together

As a society, we must continue creating safe and inclusive spaces where LGBTQIA+ people can express themselves freely, openly, and without fear.

True progress happens when communities come together to support one another and defend the rights and dignity of every individual. By promoting kindness, understanding, and equality, we can help build a world where everyone feels respected, protected, and empowered to live authentically. This IDAHOBIT, let us stand together for love, dignity, inclusion, and human rights for all.
