Afrobarometer report shows that homophobia is not African even if homophobia remains widespread in Africa. Four in five Africans don’t want gay neighbours. A resounding observation from Afrobarometer which is at its Round 6 published the 1st May 2016. The survey was conducted in 33 countries in 2014/2015. Yet, the disaggregated figures show that homophobia is not an African culture and countries are moving to be more tolerant.

Si au départ, Shayne, 24 ans, était disposé à parler à visage découvert et à se laisser photographier, ce fils et enfant unique s’est ravisé après s’être confié à sa mère. «J’ai accepté de rester anonyme par respect pour ma mère. Elle m’accepte tel que je suis sauf qu’il y a le regard des gens. Je ne veux pas qu’elle subisse des pressions, surtout de sa soeur, ma marraine. Cette dernière est censée être ouverte d’esprit. Elle a voyagé. J’ignore si elle a déjà vu des gays à l’étranger mais elle déteste ce que je représente.»
